MY MEMORIES OF TOM WATSON

My first memory of Tom Watson was 35 years ago. I was learning how to play golf and my dad handing me an instructional book. The book was broken down into sections and each section was a different PGA golfer teaching you how to use a particular club. Tom was teaching the fairway wood. I still remember him in the pictorial with his moustache and 1970's clothing attire. I learned a lot from that book.
He was the golfer that passed Jack Nicklaus as the number one golfer during the 1980's. Besides their rivalry they, they became good friends. Tom is the only golfer I have ever seen that when interviewed is consistly kind about all subject matters including his fellow players.
This week he is playing the British Open and leading during the second round. At the age of 59, this is remarkable. I would love to see him win it, but realize the odds are against. I feel he still hits the ball as well as he ever has, but his putting game can be questionable. The two things he has on his side, is he has won this competition 5 times and is arguably the greatest links player of all time. I hope to see him in the final pairing on Sunday. It would bring back memories one more time.

Tom is arguably the most consistent golfer of his 40 year career than any other golfer in history. He sets an example for golfers who want to compete than long. I wonder what is secrets are?
